Overview

Kasim Sulton has been a considerable influence on the New York music scene for over 30 years. Born in Brooklyn in 1955, Kasim moved to Staten Island in 1961 and has made his home there since. Kasim has toured and recorded with artists as diverse as Meat Loaf, Todd Rundgren, Joan Jett, Hall and Oates, Cheap Trick, Richie Sambora, Mick Jagger, Celine Dion and Jon Bon Jovi. He has also played and or sang on over 100 albums as well as writing the Top 20 Hit 'Set Me Free 'that appears on the Adventures In Utopia record. Often described as 'a musician's musician', Kasim continues to maintain a strong presence in the music industry. Honing his craft in the New York music scene during the early 1970's Kasim managed to catch the attention of people like Michael Kaman, Mick Ronson and Cherry Vanilla. After an audition in 1974 Kasim joined Cherry Vanilla's Rhymbo Band as the Pianist, touring and recording with her for the next two years. In 1976 during a visit to his close friend and fellow Staten Islander, Earl Slick's home he learned that Todd Rundgren was auditioning Bass players for his band Utopia. Borrowing twenty dollars to take an Adirondack Trailways bus to Woodstock to play with the band for a day to see if they might be interested in hiring a 20 year old who had very little experience outside of the bar scene in NYC. A week later he was in the band and started what is now a 38 year career. The rest of the 70's saw Kasim playing and recording with not only Utopia but contributing his talents to artists like Meat Loaf (Bat Out of Hell), Tom Robinson and Patty Smith as both a Bassist and Vocalist. In 1980, Kasim penned 'Set Me Free 'the only top 20 hit Utopia would have as a band. In 1981, Kasim signed with EMI America and recorded his first self-titled album. Taking a brief leave from his Utopia duties, he formed his own band and played to audiences across the US. Through the 80's and into the 90's Kasim toured and recorded with Joan Jett, Patti Smythe, Hall & Oates and Cheap Trick. In 1992, after lending his vocals to the million + selling album Bat Out Of Hell II he was asked by Meat Loaf to join his band as the rhythm guitarist and keyboard player. He switched from that position to Musical Director and Bass player in 1998, producing the Meat Loaf VH1 Storyteller's record in 1999. Kasim never stopped writing his own songs and in 2002 decided it was time to record another solo record. In 2002 Quid Pro Quo was released and Kasim started playing shows once again. This time going out by himself and playing the material he wrote as a solo artist as well as his Utopia catalogue with his acoustic guitar and a piano. For the next eight years Kasim played in clubs and theaters between his tours with meat Loaf and Todd Rundgren. In 2010 Kasim started work on his third solo CD. Appropriately titled '3'. Not only because it would be his third proper record but also because of the importance of that number in the world. Body, mind, spirit ... Past, present, future ... Thought, word, deed ... Earth, fire, wind ... etc. It's also important to note that unlike his past records where Kasim would normally play all the instruments himself, he made the decision to have some of his favorite musicians contribute their talents. So, for the first time since 1992, all four Utopia members appear on the same record along with Buck Darhma (Blue Oyster Cult), Greg Hawkes (The Cars), Mark Rivera (Billy Joel), Andy Timmons to name a few. "I couldn't be more proud of a body of work than I am of this record".
