Phillip Whack plays John Coltrane
After much-acclaim and sold-out performances, Charlotte’s Jazz Arts Initiative’s (JAI) monthly series—The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater – is swinging through the summer on August 18 & 19, with renowned tenor saxophonist Phillip Whack paying tribute to jazz icon John Coltrane. The Stage Door Theater is part of Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, at the corner of 5th and College in Uptown Charlotte.
Phillip Whack is a native of Columbia, SC. He was classically trained on the saxophone, and continued his studies at Brevard College in Brevard , NC. Whack says that his life was changed forever when he was introduced to jazz. Whack has had opportunities to perform with many of the world’s best musicians including: The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Ojays, Clarence Clemons, Tom Browne, Wycliffe Gordon, Fred Wesley and the New JB's, Maceo Parker, Lenny Kravitz, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Branford Marsalis and others. Phillip's travels have allowed him to tour 48 states and 21 countries covering Europe, Asia, and Canada and Mexico. He now resides in Charlotte, NC and can be heard in various venues in the area when not touring.
